Trimming the turkey: Locally sourced birds for your holiday meal

It’s time to plan your holiday dinners. Lucky for you, southeast Minnesota has numerous places for you to purchases locally-raised turkey. Here are some ideas:

 

Callister Farms, West Concord

All poultry is processed on the farm in their inspected processing plant. They do not use antibiotics, medications, growth enhancers or stimulants.

Farm on Wheels, Kenyon

Turkeys are humanely raised on unrestricted, open pasture with no soy products. The farm is certified organic.

Ferndale Market, Cannon Falls

Turkey is free range in the warmer months and always antibiotic free. Processed naturally, without additives, at a USDA-inspected facility. Pre-order process starts picking up around Nov. 1. Turkeys range from 10-24 pounds.

Fresh turkeys from Ferndale Market in Cannon Falls will be available at Just Rite Foods for sale between Nov. 16-17. The store has begun taking Thanksgiving orders. Around mid-November, they begin taking Christmas orders that will be frozen, then thawed out for the customer.

Simple Harvest Farm Organics, Nerstrand

Heritage breed turkeys and Broad Breasted Whites raised on pasture with organic feed. No additives or perservatives are used. The heritage turkeys are 10-15 pounds and the Broad Breasted Whites are 20-25 pounds.
